VAER Upcycled is a Copenhagen-based sustainable footwear brand founded by Lili Dreyer and Emma Diehl. The brand was built around the philosophy of circular design, aiming to divert discarded textiles from landfills and turn them into high-value sneakers. The name VÆR is derived from the Danish word for 'value' (værdi) as well as the verb 'to be' (vær), reflecting their mission to see worth in post-consumer materials and let textiles retain their original, authentic character without unnecessary chemically heavy transformations. VAER operates a closed-loop manufacturing model: sourcing discarded textiles from EU-based local collection (jeans from non-profits like Salvation Army Denmark, workwear and linens from industrial textile services like Elis), design and cutting optimization in Portugal, ethical assembly in a family-owned factory near Porto, Portugal (fair labor, above-minimum wage, 40-hour weeks, healthcare, permanent contracts), and a circular take-back program (Re:Wair) where returned shoes are shredded and molded into new soles.
